Christine Johnson serves as Executive Director of South Carolina Equality, managing all aspects of the organization's programs and operations.

 

Christine Johnson was appointed executive director of SC Equality in July of 2010. A South Carolina native, she served two terms as a member of the Utah House of Representatives and retired in July of 2010 to lead South Carolina’s LGBT political advocacy organization.  As an openly lesbian elected official, she has advocated rights and equal protections for members of the LGBT community. She sponsored housing and workplace non-discrimination legislation as well as a resolution to overturn Don't Ask, Don't Tell among many other bills.

Her public service also includes service as a board member of Equality Utah, Reach Out and Read and Utah’s Rape Recovery Center. She has served Utah's LGBT community as Vice-Chair of the Stonewall Democrats, Vice-Chair of the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission and Founder of BRIDGE, a community-based LGBT outreach organization.

She attended the University of the District of Columbia and Utah's Dixie State College. She has a daughter who attends Seattle University and recently acted as a surrogate mother for two friends, now fathers who live in Salt Lake City.

Sam Shoemaker, Law Clerk 

Sam Shoemaker is a third year law student at the University of South Carolina School of Law.  There he is the president of the Carolina Equality Alliance, a student organization for students interested in LGBT rights and the law. Sam graduated from the Darla Moore School of Business at USC in 2009 with a major in Real Estate. He serves as the secretary for the AIDS Benefit Foundation of South Carolina and currently lives in Columbia with his partner Andy and their dog Paddy.

This policy states SC Equality's position on discrimination. This policy applies to all SC Equality employees, volunteers, members, clients, and contractors.

SC Equality does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, height, weight, physical or mental ability, veteran status, military obligations, and marital status.

This policy also applies to internal promotions, training, opportunities for advancement, terminations, outside vendors, organization members and customers, service clients, use of contractors and consultants, and dealings with the general public.
