Fighting for Equal Rights

In February 2002, for the first time in the history of the LGBT community in the state, leaders from LGBT and allied organizations were invited to meet to discuss the environment for LGBT people in South Carolina and how we could work together to effect change. From this meeting, SCEC was born, with these principal foci:
  • Change hearts and minds through education and visibility and seek to educate rather than alienate
  • Restore dignity and a sense of efficacy to an LGBT community constantly barraged by negative messages
  • Give a public and positive "face" to our community
  • Create coalitions and share resources within our community and between us and other human rights groups
  • Provide support and connection to isolated or closeted LGBT people
  • Engage the moveable middle heterosexual population in our work
  • Monitor and impact public policy in South Carolina for LGBT equality
