Love Wins in South Carolina — Because We Fought for It

On Valentine’s Day, we celebrate love.

Love is love

The quiet kind.

The bold kind.

The kind that stands in a courthouse surrounded by friends and family and says, “I do.”

But in South Carolina, love didn’t win by accident.

It won because people fought for it.

It won because couples refused to wait any longer. It won because advocates, attorneys, organizers, and everyday South Carolinians believed that LGBTQ+ families deserved dignity under the law.

It won because organizations like SC Equality showed up — in courtrooms, in legislative chambers, and in communities across our state.

When marriage equality became the law of the land, it changed lives forever. For the first time, LGBTQ+ couples in South Carolina could marry the person they love with the same rights and protections as anyone else.

That victory wasn’t symbolic. It was personal.

It meant hospital visitation rights.

It meant parental protections.

It meant security and stability for families.

It meant recognition.

And today, as we feature stories from couples who were part of that historic moment, we’re reminded of something important:

Love wins — but only when we defend it.

A 36-Hour Valentine’s Challenge: $2,000 to Protect Love

From noon on February 13 through 11:59 PM on February 14, SC Equality is launching a 36-hour Valentine’s Day fundraiser with one goal:

Raise $2,000 to protect the love we fought for.

In recent years, we’ve seen renewed attacks on LGBTQ+ rights across the country — including here in South Carolina. While marriage equality remains the law, the broader fight for equality continues.

Your gift during this special Valentine’s campaign helps:

  • Defend LGBTQ+ families in the State House

  • Fight harmful legislation

  • Support community education and advocacy

  • Ensure that love — in all its forms — is protected

Whether you give $25, $50, $100, or more, your donation is a declaration:

Love still wins in South Carolina.
